All they need is a little "Opportunity" from us.
I was talking with a person from the U.S. the other day that was working in a small village while on her mission trip with DCI. When she retuned to the DCI campus during that nights debriefing she told the group that a girl in the village asked her a question. Her question was, “I heard that in the United States of America you actually build houses for your cars. Is this true?” This little girl had nothing. She lived in a tarpaper shack that in America we would not even let our dogs live in. The U.S. girl doing mission work asked the mother what her daughter was talking about. Them mother said that last week they had to travel into the city because one of her other children was in the hospital. While stopping in a department store her daughter had seen a commercial on the television that showed a man driving a car. Then she said he drove the car into its house. The girl from the mission trip replied, yes they do, but the car lets us live there too.”
Don’t we live in a bubble world? Did you know that 85% of the world lives like this young girl. She doesn’t have much of a home, a car or even electricity. Her family doesn’t have access to three meals a day and yet, us Americans let our cars live inside with us.
The first need in every area of the world we impact is to help people come to the Knowledge of Salvation through Christ Jesus. The second need is “opportunity.” There is a saying that we live by at DCI. “If you give a man a fish, you fed him for a day, but if you teach a man to fish you fed him for a lifetime. So this is step two, finding opportunity for people. All they need is “opportunity.”
Each year we highlight a young person that with a little “opportunity”, their life will be changed and they will then change the lives of others. This year’s young person is Esther Humes. Her desire is to get a college education. Esther’s desire is to one day be a doctor. All she needs is a little help.
